When I found out how cruelly calves were confined in veal crates, I stood staring with my mouth open in disbelief. I never ordered veal again. I know many people would agree with me that veal crates should be eliminated, but the problems of our complex society can be overwhelming and we have so many things to do with so little time to do them.
What if you could help to make the world a more humane place for animals right now by investing one hour of your time? Would you help? The situation is urgent and time is running out. 650,000 signatures of registered California voters are needed by February 22 to put an initiative on the November 2008 ballot. This initiative can put an end to the cruel confinement of calves, pigs and hens on farms in California by the year 2011. The cages aren’t just cruel, the conditions of confinement make the animals more susceptible to disease and factory farms that use these cages are among the most serious causes of resource depletion, pollution and global warming.
This petition drive is sponsored by Californians for Humane Farms and The Humane Society of the United States, but the list of endorsements includes many others, among them Dr. Jane Goodall, Wolfgang Puck, Daryl Hannah, the Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego SPCA, a long list of veterinarians, animal nonprofits, businesses and religious organizations.
